Teaching memorization tricks are good for surface learning, but often leave students at a loss for how to use that information in novel contexts.
Practiced retrieval, paraphrasing and interleaving are more effective ways to promote a deeper learning and transfer of knowledge and skills as these methods require more effort, and therefore strengthen the neural pathways, which promote long term remembering, and make it more likely for students to use that information in different contexts.
